Project Allsmiles
School-Based Dental Sealant program Services

The services that are provided to any child with a positive, fully completed, consent slip includes a dental hygiene screening, oral hygiene instruction, prophylaxis (cleaning), fluoride treatment, dental sealants, and referrals (if needed). Our primary goals are to reduce the incidence of tooth decay and other oral health disparities among school-aged children in California; and we will do this by eliminating access-to-care disparities, bringing care to the children.

Dental Screening

Dental screenings are an important part of every person's overall health care. A dental screening is a process in which a dental provider examines the teeth and gums for signs of disease or irregularity.

Dental Cleaning

Cleaning removes tartar/calculus from above and just below the gum line that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. At-home dental care removes plaque, but only professional dental instruments can remove tartar build-up. Polishing involves the application of a gritty substance/flavored paste to the teeth, which are then buffed with a rotating rubber brush. This removes plaque and surface stains. Patient's mouths are rinsed often during cleaning and polishing. The dental hygienist encourages patients to use proper daily dental hygiene (brushing, flossing), and patients are instructed on the proper brushing or flossing techniques. In addition, the patients will be given a free toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss to take home.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a thin, composite resin coating applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars and premolars) to help prevent cavities from developing in children. Dental sealants have been shown to be highly effective in the prevention of pit and fissure caries/decay

Oral Hygiene Instruction

Dental hygiene education at an elementary school age is crucial for setting the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Teaching children proper oral care habits early on not only prevents dental issues but also instills essential life skills. At AllSmiles, we believe that educating young minds about oral health is an investment in their overall well-being. Our programs aim to empower students with knowledge and habits that will serve them throughout their lives, promoting brighter, healthier smiles for the future.

Fluoride Treatment

The use of fluoride has been endorsed as a safe and effective method of preventing tooth decay. When fluoride enters the mouth it is deposited into the teeth, strengthening teeth during a process called remineralization. Children who receive adequate levels of fluoride develop permanent teeth that are more resistant to decay.
Fluoride is used to protect against tooth decay/cavities and the complications that can result.

Referrals for unmet needs

Referrals and continuity of care are vital components of our commitment to comprehensive oral health. At AllSmiles, we understand that addressing dental needs doesn't end with a single visit. Our programs emphasize the importance of seamless care coordination, ensuring that students receive necessary referrals and follow-up treatments. This holistic approach not only resolves existing issues but also paves the way for a lifetime of confident smiles, reinforcing our dedication to long-term dental well-being.

These and all of our services are provided completely FREE of charge to all students, their parents, and their schools.

At AllSmiles, we are committed to promoting healthy smiles for all students. We are proud to offer FREE dental hygiene services to students through our School-Based Dental Sealant Program. In the state of California, every child is entitled to a once-per-year dental hygiene cleaning and visit, courtesy of Medi-Cal Dental. As California Medicaid Providers, we bring these essential services right to the students in their schools, ensuring they receive expert care and valuable education to maintain optimal oral health. Our mission is to empower students to take charge of their oral health today and into the future.

Project Allsmiles
Project Unhoused Dental Hygiene program Services

The services provided through Project Unhoused include dental hygiene screenings, oral hygiene instruction, silver diamine fluoride (SDF) application, fluoride varnish treatments, preventive cleanings when possible, and referrals for urgent or unmet dental needs. Our primary goals are to reduce oral health disparities among unhoused and housing-insecure individuals in California by providing compassionate, accessible care directly in the community. We aim to eliminate barriers by meeting people where they are — on the streets, in shelters, and at transitional housing centers — and connecting them to both immediate and long-term dental support.

Comprehensive Dental Screening

Each patient receives a thorough oral evaluation, including a Periodontal Screening and Recording (PSR) and full charting of existing and missing dentition. This helps identify active disease, including caries, gingivitis, and early to moderate periodontal involvement. Screenings guide the clinical decision-making process and determine if same-day treatment is indicated.

Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) Treatment (D1354)

RDHAPs apply SDF to cavitated carious lesions to arrest decay, reduce hypersensitivity, and stabilize the disease process. This service is ideal for patients who are not yet able to access restorative dental care and serves as a safe, evidence-based interim treatment.

Dental Cleaning (Prophylaxis / Debridement)

Patients eligible for a routine prophylaxis (D1110) will receive scaling, polishing, and oral hygiene instruction on the same day. If the screening reveals periodontal disease, a gross debridement (D4355) or quadrant-based scaling/root planing plan is initiated. Patients are then scheduled for a second visit — either at one of our partner shelter sites or a community location of their choosing — to complete debridement and receive ongoing periodontal maintenance as appropriate.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are a thin, composite resin coating applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars and premolars) to help prevent cavities from developing in children. Dental sealants have been shown to be highly effective in the prevention of pit and fissure caries/decay

Resource Navigation & Referrals

For services beyond the RDHAP scope (e.g., extractions, restorations, prosthodontics), our team provides warm referrals to trusted partners, including FQHCs, dental schools, mobile dental units, and Medi-Cal providers. We support patients with referrals, documentation, and system navigation — and, when needed, coordinate with our “Tooth Ferries” to accompany patients to appointments.

Oral Cancer Screening (OCS)

All patients receive a visual and tactile oral cancer screening as part of their exam. This includes inspection of the lips, tongue, buccal mucosa, floor of mouth, hard and soft palate, and lymph nodes, with palpation where appropriate. Suspicious lesions are documented and referred promptly for further diagnostic evaluation.

Oral Hygiene Instruction (D1330)

Dental hygiene education at an elementary school age is crucial for setting the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles. Teaching children proper oral care habits early on not only prevents dental issues but also instills essential life skills. At AllSmiles, we believe that educating young minds about oral health is an investment in their overall well-being. Our programs aim to empower students with knowledge and habits that will serve them throughout their lives, promoting brighter, healthier smiles for the future.

Fluoride Varnish Application (D1206)

The use of fluoride has been endorsed as a safe and effective method of preventing tooth decay. When fluoride enters the mouth it is deposited into the teeth, strengthening teeth during a process called remineralization. Children who receive adequate levels of fluoride develop permanent teeth that are more resistant to decay.
Fluoride is used to protect against tooth decay/cavities and the complications that can result.

Denture Cleaning & Care Instruction

Patients with prosthetics can receive free denture cleaning at our mobile van or pop-up tent. RDHAPs also educate patients on proper denture hygiene, overnight storage, and sore spot identification, and provide denture cups and cleanser tablets when available.

These and all of our services are provided completely FREE of charge to all unhoused individuals, shelters, and community partners.

At AllSmiles, we are deeply committed to reducing health disparities and restoring dignity through oral health. Project Unhoused provides compassionate, mobile dental hygiene care directly to individuals experiencing homelessness — wherever they are. Whether at shelters, encampments, or service hubs, our care is always free, trauma-informed, and patient-centered.

🦷 Every person deserves access to preventive dental care — regardless of housing status.

As licensed California Medi-Cal Dental providers, our RDHAP-led teams deliver essential hygiene services covered by state benefits, helping patients manage pain, prevent disease, and maintain their oral health. By eliminating traditional access barriers, we empower unhoused individuals with knowledge, tools, and direct care to support both their health and humanity.
